As we drove back to the children’s home, Jesus opened my eyes to sights I couldn’t ignore: extreme human suffering…families living on filthy streets and brothel areas where children were being sold as sex slaves. Then, there were the two precious little girls asleep on our laps; one rescued from a railroad track and the other raised on the streets by an alcoholic father and a dying mother. It was just too much! It wasn’t just an assault to my senses. It was an assault to my heart. An anger rose up in me that I didn’t know existed. And I leveled it all toward the God that I had trusted with my whole heart since I was nineteen years old.

Many people have asked me how… How do you keep going after seeing so much suffering? How do you not become discouraged? How do you know it's worth it? My response is, “You ask me how because one time I asked God how.” Here is part of my story…

❋ Intentional Structure
I accused Him bitterly, “This is too much suffering! These are innocent children. How could YOU let this happen?!” INSTANTLY, I heard the Lord’s almost audible response, “No…How could YOU let this happen? You are supposed to be my hands, my feet, an ambassador of my love to a broken world. This is on your watch! How could YOU let this happen?”
❋ Collaborative Energy

Connection is a core part of the process. You’ll learn just as much from the group as from the content itself.

Those words Jesus spoke to me are the motivation behind what I do and ultimately behind this initiative— The Thomas Initiative. When the renowned journalist asked Mother Teresa how she could work with beggars covered in sores, maggots, and even leprosy, she responded, "I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus, I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus."
There is a powerful encounter with Jesus recorded for us in the Gospel of John, Thomas, who doubted that Jesus had been raised from the dead is confronted with the risen Jesus. Here is what is written, “Thomas replied to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people who have not seen and yet have believed.” This encounter must have fueled a fire in Thomas because tradition tells us that he took the life changing message of Jesus to the farthest reaches of the known world and was martyred in southern India.
❋ A Supportive Space
We may not be able to see Jesus as Thomas did, but we are more than able to see Him as Mother Teresa was able to. We can see Him in the faces of widows and orphans. We can see Him in the lives of the oppressed and destitute. We can see Him in any and every face that needs to hear the truth of His love and forgiveness. So I encourage you to become a part of our work here and around the world. See through the eyes of faith, and let that vision mobilize you to make a difference for Christ in your home, your community, your nation, and yes, even like Thomas, to the ends of the earth!
